Power Requirements For a Commercial Kitchen

While setting up a restaurant or café, there’s a lot beyond interiors and deciding the menu. Be it the commercial equipment installation or ensuring electrical supplies for the range of electronic kitchen equipment, everything needs to be examined well.

Usually, a restaurant has a basic range of kitchen appliances including glass washers, coffee machines, microwaves, deep fryers, commercial pasta cookers, steamers, grills, gas stove and oven. And apparently, you need sufficient amount of electricity to run such equipment.

As compared to commercial kitchen equipment, domestic equipment requires less electrical power. Usually, for domestic appliances, the required power usage is 120 volts whereas for commercial ones it should be between 208-240 volts.

At present, new rules and regulations have started in regard to power requirements of commercial kitchens. For every region and range of different kitchen equipment, there is a set amount of power supply. All these regulations have been implemented under the strict guidance of governing authority.

Here’s a quick overview of the set voltage for different areas.

  1. 110- 115 Volt (low) – This has been eliminated from the kitchen equipment power supply format due to its low power ability. Now-a-days, the heavy range of kitchen equipment is used which cannot be operated well on this amount of low voltage. Resulting, this amount has been eradicated.
  1. 120 volts (low) – Majorly used in Canada, US, Mexico and Central America, this amount is usually used for light kitchen equipment such as- dishwashers, blenders, microwaves.
  1. 208 volts (high) – This amount of power supply is considered efficient and legal in Canada, US, Mexico and Central America. With this, heavy commercial kitchen equipment like pizza oven, heavy under bench dishwasher, coffee machines (small), and conveyor pizza ovens can be easily operated.
  1. 220 volt (high) – Though, it is high electrical power but at present, it has been considered out-dated by many countries due to some technical issues. This is why, from past few years, no commercial kitchen equipment is manufactured with this amount of voltage.

  1. 230 Volt (high) – Rare people use this voltage amount in Canada, US, Mexico and Central America, which is why it has been called, out-dated in the mentioned areas. Apart from these, it is used worldwide in much kitchen equipment.
  1. 240 Volt (high) – This one is completely legal to be used anywhere in the world.

Many people are living with a misconception that high voltage of electricity can either fuse or damage the kitchen product. But that happens due to the fluctuating supply of electricity. This can be fixed and only damages the longevity of the particular kitchen equipment.

Conclusion-

Different commercial kitchen appliances demands for a varied amount of electricity supply. Due to this factor, it is always necessary to ask an experienced electrician or an electronic engineer about the same. With this way, the hazardous accidents like short circuit and appliances damage can be avoided. Apart from this, it is mandatory to check the adequate amount of electricity supply before the commencement of the restaurant; otherwise, your license may get canceled due to such reasons.
